01: The Brief

Classic cars are more than machines; they are rolling sculptures. For this series, the goal was to capture the intersection of mid-century engineering and modern visual storytelling. I set out to document a private collection of vintage vehicles, focusing on the tactile details; the grain of the leather, the curve of the fender, and the soul of the engine - to create a gallery-grade digital and print archive.

Key Objective: Use specialized lighting and macro photography to elevate vintage automobiles into fine-art assets for private collectors and high-end automotive publications.

02: The Challenge

The primary challenge of automotive photography is reflection management. A classic car’s chrome and high-gloss paint act like a 360-degree mirror, picking up every stray light and distracting element in the environment. To produce a "Herko-standard" image, I had to control the environment entirely, ensuring the focus remained on the vehicle's design language rather than the background noise.

  • The Technical Hurdle: Balancing deep shadows with high-intensity highlights to emphasize the "fluidity" of the metal.
  • The Goal: Create a series of images that feel "expensive" and "heavy," moving away from standard, flat dealership photography.

03: The Process

I utilized a "Chiaroscuro" lighting technique - a dramatic high-contrast style that uses light to emerge shapes from total darkness.

  • Macro Texture Focus: I focused on the "micro-stories": the patina on a 1960s steering wheel, the intricate honeycomb of a radiator grille, and the unique typography of vintage badging.
  • Post-Production Color Grading: I applied a desaturated, "filmic" grade with increased grain to match the era of the vehicles while maintaining the sharpness of modern 4K digital sensors.
  • Architectural Framing: I treat the car as an architectural subject, using wide-angle tilt-shift perspectives to maintain straight vertical lines and prevent the "distortion" often seen in amateur automotive photography.

04: The Solution

A cinematic archive that preserves automotive history with a modern, disruptive edge.

  • The Hero Portfolio: A collection of wide-angle "hero shots" that utilize the "Herko Perspective"-low angles that make the vehicles look powerful and imposing.
  • The Detail Suite: A series of macro shots that highlight the craftsmanship of the era, perfect for editorial spreads or social media "close-up" teasers.
  • Print-Ready Large Format: All images were captured and processed at high-bit depth, allowing for large-scale gallery prints (up to 60 inches) without loss of detail.

05: The Impact

  • Brand Elevation: The series transformed a private collection into a prestigious brand, increasing the perceived value of the vehicles for potential auction or exhibition.
  • Editorial Interest: These visuals have become a staple in my portfolio, demonstrating my ability to handle difficult lighting and highly reflective subjects—a direct parallel to the metallic surfaces in my engineering and architectural work.
  • Cross-Channel Utility: The assets were optimized for everything from high-resolution print books to high-engagement Instagram Reels, showcasing the versatility of the Herko Productions toolkit.
