01: The Brief

The East Rochester Rotary Club reached a monumental milestone: their Centennial Anniversary. They needed a commemorative 100-year program book that did more than list dates—it needed to serve as a high-end coffee table archive. I was tasked with the creative direction, editorial layout, and print management of a comprehensive book that honored the past while celebrating the club's vibrant future.

Key Objective: To synthesize a century of archival photos, documents, and testimonials into a prestigious, professionally bound publication for members, donors, and local historians.

02: The Challenge

The primary obstacle was information architecture. I was presented with 100 years of unorganized physical assets - faded newspaper clippings, grainy black-and-white polaroids, and decades of meeting minutes.

  • The Restoration: Many of the historical assets were damaged or low-resolution, requiring extensive digital restoration to meet modern print standards.
  • The Flow: The book needed to be digestible. It couldn't just be a chronological list; it needed thematic sections (Youth Programs, International Service, Local Infrastructure) to keep the reader engaged.

03: The Process

I approached the project as both a designer and an archivist, ensuring the final product felt like a premium piece of history.

  • Editorial Strategy: I established a "Decade-by-Decade" framework, using unique typography and color-grading for each era to help the reader navigate the 100-year timeline visually.
  • Visual Restoration: I utilized advanced AI-upscaling and manual retouching to bring 1920s-era photographs to 300 DPI clarity, ensuring they looked sharp alongside modern high-res imagery.
  • Layout Design: Using a grid-based system inspired by classic editorial journals, I balanced dense historical text with "breathing room"—large, full-bleed images and pull-quotes that highlighted key club achievements.

04: The Solution

A 100 year commemorative masterpiece that stands as the definitive record of the East Rochester Rotary’s legacy.

  • Centennial Branding: I developed a custom "100 Year" seal used throughout the book, which was later adopted for the club's anniversary event signage and digital presence.
  • Ad-Space Integration: I designed a streamlined system for community sponsors to be featured in the book without disrupting the editorial flow, helping the club offset production costs.
  • A Heritage Archive: The final book was not just a program for an event; it became a historical document gifted to the local library and town archives.

05: The Impact

  • Commemorative Success: The book served as the centerpiece of the Centennial Gala, with all copies claimed by attendees as a cherished souvenir.
  • Fundraising Value: The professional quality of the publication encouraged higher-tier sponsorships, successfully raising significant funds for the club’s next century of service projects.
  • Brand Authority: The project elevated the Rotary’s public image, demonstrating that even a 100-year-old organization can communicate with modern, high-end precision.
